AVFSS is a food focused action group that strives to strengthen the food system* in the Alberni Valley. This is accomplished through:
- Supporting sustainable food
- Collaborating with partners
- Supporting community-led solutions
- Education and resource sharing
- Advocating for fair-food policies
* A complete food system includes three pillars – production, processing/preservation, and distribution. The absence of any one of these will threaten the whole system, and so all are needed to ensure a strong, vibrant and food secure community.
The Farm–Fish–Forage Directory is your go-to guide to the farmers, fishers, and foragers who feed our community. Created for both residents and visitors, this directory brings together the Valley’s primary producers of fresh vegetables, fruits, meats, dairy, seafood, wild foods, and more – making it easy to find and support what’s grown, caught, and gathered close to home. The directory will not include retailers, shops or other businesses involved in subsequent steps in the food system.
Alberni Valley Food Security Society has partnered with The Alberni District Fall Fair, Dock+, and Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District to update a local Farmstand Guide. We encourage residents and visitors to explore the homegrown food thar our community has to offer by visiting these vendors at their farm stands and markets.
We strategically invest in inclusive economic development, diversification, and innovation in partnership with communities across Vancouver Island, the Sunshine Coast, and islands and inlets from the Salish Sea to Cape Caution.
In addition to financing and loan programs, NEDC offers business advisory services free of charge to Indigenous entrepreneurs and First Nations community-owned businesses on Vancouver Island. With over 40 years of planting seeds in communities and over $160 million in loans approved, we are catalyzing socio-economic independence for our nations.
